UK launches investor forum to spur green finance

The British government launched an initiative on Tuesday to unlock new investment in low-carbon technologies and make London a global hub for green finance.

The launch of the Capital Markets Climate Initiative (CMCI) is being marked by an event at the London Stock Exchange.

Policy makers and investment banks such as Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) will meet to discuss obstacles to cleaner energy.

By integrating satellite mapping, airborne-laser technology, and ground-based plot surveys, scientists from the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology, with colleagues from the World Wildlife Fund and in coordination with the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), have revealed the first high-resolution maps of carbon locked up in tropical forest vegetation and emitted by land-use practices.

The United Nations Environment Programme has said the review of the working of Dr R K Pachauri-headed IPCC by the Inter-Academic Council (IAC) does not question the science of climate change and views to the contrary should not hold back the international community from finding a decisive new agreement that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 'safe' levels.

Yes Bank Ltd., a privately owned Indian lender, and CarbonDesk Group Plc agreed to cooperate on emissions-cutting projects to generate offset credits.

The venture aims to increase the amount of Certified Emissions Reduction credits produced in India, help curb greenhouse gases and give European factories and power stations a less expensive way to meet pollution caps.

India rejects Vedanta mining plan on green worries

India on Tuesday rejected a plan by UK-based mining group Vedanta Resources Plc to mine bauxite in an eastern state over environmental concerns, a blow to the firm already facing hurdles to a planned $9.6 billion energy deal in the country.

The decision comes after about four years of a global campaign against Vedanta's plan to mine in Orissa state that the government says could affect large swathes of forested hills considered sacred by indigenous tribes.

Within a month of approving the 600 MW Loharinag Pala dam on Uttarakhand, a group of ministers on Friday scrapped the National Thermal Power Corporation project following intervention by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The GoM headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had approved the project in
July on the ground that NTPC had already spent Rs 600 crore and ordered equipment worth Rs 2,000 for the project.

Green growing reduces global-warming gases

Those crop fields nearby might not get a second thought from local residents.

But according to a recent study by Stanford University researchers, the high-yield agriculture on display there is more than an efficient engine of food production. It's also a great way to cut down on global-warming gases.

The study found that huge crop yield increases per acre since 1961 have translated into big reductions in greenhouse gas emissions -- 590 billion tons of carbon dioxide, according to the authors' estimate.
