Double renewable energy by 2030, EU tells developing nations

 The EU wants countries meeting at a conference in June under the UN's Rio+20 mechanism to double their share of renewable energy by 2030 under an international obligation. It also wants countries like India to agree to double its energy efficiency levels under an international understanding.

State to give priority to green projects

The state government has decided to put its weight behind green and environment-friendly industrial projects, and such projects will be given preference in terms of expedited clearance and other non-financial benefits.

This was stated by Valsa Nair Singh, state environment secretary, while addressing the conference, 'Green co - the next wave for sustaining growth,' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Mumbai on Friday.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah Calls for increased Lending to Renewable Energy Sector

Chevrolet Creates Environmental Label for New Cars

 Chevrolet will begin placing environmental information about new cars on a window sticker this year, a first for the U.S. auto industry, which is looking to communicate a shift to greener operations and vehicles.

In addition to the standard window label, which contains the EPA-estimated miles per gallon (mpg) figures, Chevrolet’s new “Ecologic” labels will feature information about manufacturing, driving and recycling.

India to defend local-buy policy in solar mission as US, EU protest

India is readying to defend its policy requiring companies to source local content for the national solar mission project, a rule that has triggered protests from the US and the EU. 

The commerce department is talking to the ministry of new and renewable energy on how to argue its case should the dispute reach the World Trade Organisation. The ministry is responsible for executing the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Solar Mission, which was launched in 2010 to promote use of solar energy.

Himachal Pradesh to be the 1st state to become carbon-neutral by 2020: Dhumal

 Himachal Pradesh would be the first state in the country to become carbon neutral by 2020 by undertaking "carbon smart growth", Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal claimed here today. 

"The carbon footprint per capita in Himachal Pradesh has been assessed at 1.4 tonne per capita in comparison to national average of 1.57 tonnes per capita," Dhumal said while speaking at 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.

India Clean-Energy Investments Reach $10.3 Billion in 2011: BNEF

Investment in clean-energy projects grew faster in India than in any other major economy last year, rising 52 percent to $10.3 billion, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The largest increase came from the solar industry with $4.2 billion of funding for sun-powered plants connected to the grid, a seven-fold increase from 2010 and about par with the $4.6 billion that went to wind projects, according to a statement today from the London-based researcher.
