Himachal Pradesh to be the 1st state to become carbon-neutral by 2020: DhumalHimachal Pradesh would be the first state in the country to become carbon neutral by 2020 by undertaking "carbon smart growth", Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal claimed here today. "The carbon footprint per capita in Himachal Pradesh has been assessed at 1.4 tonne per capita in comparison to national average of 1.57 tonnes per capita," Dhumal said while speaking at 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. India Clean-Energy Investments Reach $10.3 Billion in 2011: BNEFInvestment in clean-energy projects grew faster in India than in any other major economy last year, rising 52 percent to $10.3 billion, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The largest increase came from the solar industry with $4.2 billion of funding for sun-powered plants connected to the grid, a seven-fold increase from 2010 and about par with the $4.6 billion that went to wind projects, according to a statement today from the London-based researcher. NTPC in favour of penalty on Coal India for not meeting supply commitmentsNTPC Ltd, India's top power producer, is in favour of imposing penalty on state-run Coal India Ltd for not meeting supply commitments, NTPC Chairman Arup Roy Choudhury said. State-run NTPC would also like the government to set up a coal regulator to ensure the world's top coal producer is meeting its supply commitments, he said. Coal accounts for more than half of power generation in the country. Despite India having 10 percent of the world's coal reserves, Coal India, which has a near monopoly in coal mining, is struggling to meet its production target.... Allianz, C-Quest Capital launch India carbon projectGerman insurer Allianz SE and U.S.-based C-Quest Capital LCC said on Tuesday they will finance the installation of about 8.5 million energy-efficient lightbulbs in India in return for U.N.-backed carbon offsets. The 10-year project will fund the installation of compact fluorescent lightbulbs in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and northern Delhi, Armin Sandhoevel, chief executive of Allianz Climate Solutions, told Reuters in Singapore. India’s Largest Solar Program Cuts Power Rates by Up to 33%India’s largest solar program cut the preferential rate it pays utilities for sun power as much as 33 percent as global prices of panels declined by more than half. Photovoltaic plants commissioned after the Jan. 28 deadline will be paid a rate of 9.98 rupees (20 cents) per kilowatt-hour for the first 12 years, compared with 15 rupees for those finished on time, the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission said in a tariff order on its website.
