With an annual increase in the built-up area of residential and commercial buildings by 10 per cent, the projected annual increase in the energy demand is 5.4 billion kWh. The need of the hour is to design and construct ‘high performance buildings’ so that the use of electricity can be controlled.

Aiming at this lofty target, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will host a training programme and industry meet on ‘High performance commercial buildings in India’.
The workshop is a result of the partnership of the two organisations under the Asia Pacific Partnership of Clean Development and Climate.

The workshop, which will be held on July 9, is based on one of the recent projects of TERI. It is aimed at having more high performance air-conditioned commercial buildings in the country. The panel discussion during the one-day workshop with glass manufacturer and insulation manufacturers suppliers will be moderated by professor Rajan Rawal of the Cept University.

Findings of the research carried out to establish energy conservation measures and define high performance buildings in five different climatic zones of India, will be shared with the participants. A new tool for energy conservation measures will also be introduced.

“The workshop would also include presentations by architects, who are involved in research and design of solar passive low energy cooling strategies, followed by interactive session with manufacturers to discuss the business road map for facilitating Energy Conservation Building Code complaint products,” says Mili Majumdar, director, Sustainable Habitat Division, TERI.
